Wake Forest Participating in International, Multi-site Initiative

Dr. Goldie Byrd leads Wake Forest in an initiative that greatly expands the representation of underrepresented African ancestry and Hispanic/Latino individuals in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) genetic studies.

Biography

Dr. Goldie Byrd's extraordinary career includes being a university professor, the founder of the N.C. A&T State University's Center for Outreach in Alzheimer's Aging and Community Health (COAACH), and the principal investigator for major NIH grants studying genetic factors amongst people of color for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The COAACH program was nationally recognized as a best practice for community outreach and support for Alzheimer's caregivers.

Now, Dr. Byrd is the Executive Director of the Maya Angelou Center for Health Equity where she continues to address the impact systemic, cultural and genetic factors have on health disparities.

The Maya Angelou Center for Health Equity (MACHE) is located at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston Salem North Carolina. The Center focuses on community engagement with populations that have historically experienced health disparities. We conduct independent research and collaborate with faculty across the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and beyond.

The center’s vision is to be nationally known as a preeminent health equity center that reduces health disparities in the most underserved populations.
